Similar to the Challenge model 860, which got a bad write-up in Consumers Union Reports in 1936 (see article link below).

This toaster shows signs of owner modification with the six holes drilled in the doors. Perhaps the owner thought the toaster got too hot or they wanted their toast less moist so drilled the holes so steam could escape.

Although not a bad looking toaster, this Challenge flopper did not fare well in a 1936 Consumers Union review. Consumers Union found some toasters so generally and obviously inferior [in their] design and construction they were ranked below not acceptable. Such toasters were not given the performance test because they showed poor heat insulation. Handles did not protect the user against contact with the hot toaster. The doors rest on the table when open.
